Acne During Pregnancy

Many women experience acne during pregnancy. It’s most common during the first and second trimesters. An increase in hormones called androgens can cause the glands in your skin to grow and produce more sebum — an oily, waxy substance.

This oil can clog pores and lead to bacteria, inflammation, and breakouts to treat this during pregnancy. You must avoid retinoids, or vitamin A derivatives, such as Retin-A or Renova, as well as salicylates, including products containing salicylic acid (also known as beta-hydroxy acid).

These products can cause potential harm to your developing baby. Instead, look for products that contain azelaic acid, lactic acid or glycolic acid as prescribed by your dermatologist.

Pregnancy acne can start anytime

Acne can crop up anytime during pregnancy since your androgen levels, and consequential oil production, increase early on in pregnancy. But be prepared for your third trimester, when your androgen levels are extremely high and acne can get especially bad.
