Vitiligo
Vitiligo is a long term condition that causes loss of skin color which results in white patches.
The hair from that part of the skin may also turn white. It can occur at any age but usually appears before the age of 30 years.
Vitiligo affects people of all skin types but it is more noticeable in people with darker skin tone. It is not life-threatening or contagious it is just that it can make the person feel bad about themselves or lose confidence and self esteem , embarrassed or anxious about their skin. In many Indian states it is considered very bad and marrying that child becomes a problem.
Symptoms
- White patches usually first appears on hands, face and areas around body openings and genitals.
- Premature whitening and greying of the hair on your scalp , eyelashes, eyebrows and beard.
- Loss of color in lips.
Various causes have been proposed
- Normally, the color of hair and skin is determined by melanin. Vitiligo occurs when cells that produce melanin (melanocytes) they die or stop functioning.
- Heredity , Family history
- Autoimmune condition.
- Any trigger event such as stress , skin trauma(contact with chemical) , sunburn.

- Social or psychological distress
- Sunburns
- Eye problems
Treatment
- No treatment is required for this condition if patient is comfortable cosmetically.
