Immunotherapy In Genital Warts

IMMUNOTHERAPY In Genital Warts

What is Genital warts?

Genital warts is a sexually transmitted infection caused by Human Papilloma Virus(HPV). The mainstay of treatment is destruction of the lesions by radiofrequency cautery, liquid nitrogen, use of topical solutions like podophyllin resin etc. No effective oral medication exists for this condition. Recently various intralesional immunomodulators have been tried in the treatment of warts like candida antigen, Mumps antigen, MMR vaccine, BCG vaccine, Mycobacterium w vaccine, autologous wart tissue etc to name a few. These immunomodulators stimulate the immune system of the individual to release certain cells which destroy the wart tissue from within. The biggest advantage of this therapy is that it has the potential to resolve the distant warts as well and not the wart alone that has been primarily injected.

ImmunoTherapy Procedure

The treatment involves a simple OPD procedure in which the immunotherapy agent (most commonly MMR) is injected into the largest wart in the dose of 0.1 ml to 0.3 ml once or three weekly for upto 3-6 weeks or till complete resolution of the lesions. There is no downtime and reduction in warts size and number can be seen after the first sitting but it usually takes multiple sittings to completely eradicate the lesions. Sometimes, immunotherapy is combined with other treatment modalities esp in cases of extensive warts or treatment resistant warts

The therapy is cost effective, well tolerated and avoids the pain and side effects associated with other therapies like radiofrequency cautery.
