Chilblains Causes and Treatment

What Are Chilblains?

Chilblains are red or bluish itchy, painful lesions which can develop on fingers, toes and rarely ears, on exposure to damp & cold air.

Why do people get chilblains?

The cold air causes blood vessels in the skin to tighten, leading to decreased oxygenation and inflammation in the exposed areas. This condition is common in northern parts of our country due to harsh weather conditions in winters. While anyone can develop chilblains, females, smokers and patients suffering from peripheral vascular diseases are at a greater risk. Wearing tight fitting shoes or gloves in damp weather increases the chances of chilblains. Young children and babies can also develop these lesions if they are not dressed in appropriate clothing for winters.

What are the symptoms of chilblains?

The lesions start as painful swelling of the fingers and toes and the overlying skin becomes red or bluish. In severe cases, blisters can develop on the skin. Itching or burning sensation can accompany the lesions. It tend to reoccur every year if proper precautions are not followed.

Difference between Chilblains and Raynaud's phenomenon?

While both chilblains and Raynaud phenomenon are triggered by cold, chilblains causes reddish purple lesions on the skin which can be itchy and tender. In severe cases blisters and ulcers can develop.

In people with Raynaud phenomenon, the becomes numb and paper white when exposed to the cold. After warming, the skin may turn blueish or red before returning to its normal colour. Raynaud phenomenon tends to last for minutes, while perniosis-related skin bumps can last for weeks.

How do you treat it?

The most crucial aspect of prevention and treatment is proper protection from the cold. Wear gloves and socks to protect hands and feet. Using caps and hats to cover the head is important to prevent the loss of heat. Layering of winter clothes is best to keep yourself warm. Soaking of hands and feet in warm water for short period of time is helpful. Vitamin D supplementation has not found to be effective in chronic chilblains. Usually the lesions resolve within one to three weeks, in case it persist, consult a skin specialist for proper treatment .
